Parallel hybrid
In a parallel hybrid system, a combustion engine is used to drive a load, with an electrical machine either assisting the engine or being used as a generator. As it does so, it feeds the electrical system (PTO). When the electrical machine assists or boosts the combustion engine, the energy will be taken from the electrical supply network. It is also possible to have the electrical machine drive the full load (PTI).
Advantages
- The machine is also able to operate when the hybrid system is not engaged.
- Option of electrical drive if a clutch is positioned between the diesel engine and the electrical machine.
Series hybrid
In a series hybrid power train, one or more generators are used to produced the energy required to feed the system.
Advantages
- No mechanical clutch between the diesel engine and the rest of the system.
- Energy used is fully electrical in one stage of the power train.
- Engine speed is independently adjusted for maximum fuel savings.
- Main aim is to lower the diesel engine speed or even disengage it, which results in reduced emissions, savings in fuel and greater efficiency.
Full electric
In a fully electrical system, the load is fed entirely by an electrical machine and the energy is not produced by a combustion engine. This makes it possible to operate emission-free, but also allows for:
- Less maintenance
- Reduced noise
